Our favourite flower of the year is also one of the thirstiest. A few small habits will give you a full week of colour.

Dahlias are the star of our September and October bouquets. They’re grown for us by two Somerset growers and come to the shop within a day of cutting. Treated well, they last about a week.

Water, and then more water

Dahlias drink a lot, especially in the first two days. Check the vase every morning and top it up with cool water.

Re-cut every few days

Snip a centimetre off each stem at an angle every other day. Hollow stems seal over quickly, and a fresh cut opens them up again.

Cool nights help

If you can, move them somewhere cool overnight. A porch or a cool kitchen adds days to their life.
